The Middle Is Missing

AI helps juniors punch above their weight and seniors move faster, but what happens to the career path in between?

The sales pitch for AI-assisted development has always been straightforward: everyone gets more productive. Junior developers produce cleaner code faster. Senior developers offload boilerplate and accelerate through routine tasks. The entire team ships more, sooner, with fewer late nights staring at stack traces. It sounds like a rising tide lifting all boats, and partly it is. But the tide is not rising evenly. It is eroding the middle of the beach, and the industry has not yet reckoned with what this means.

The effects at the extremes are already obvious. A junior developer with a capable coding assistant can produce syntactically correct implementations of common patterns in a fraction of the time it would have taken five years ago. They can scaffold a REST API, implement authentication flows, wire up database connections—all with minimal reference to external documentation. The assistant handles the mechanics: the precise sequence of method calls, the correct configuration options, the boilerplate that varies only slightly from project to project. The output looks professional. It compiles. It often works on the first try.

Seniors experience something different but equally valuable. For a developer who already knows what correct looks like, the assistant becomes a highly competent stenographer. The senior describes the intent, the assistant produces the implementation, and the senior reviews for the subtle errors that matter—race conditions, security boundary violations, coupling that will cause pain later. The cognitive load shifts from typing to judging, and the throughput gains are real. By some accounts, AI now writes a quarter or more of the code at major technology companies. That tracks with what many experienced developers report from their own workflows.

The trouble comes when you ask a simple question: what makes a developer senior in the first place?

The traditional answer involves years of accumulated scar tissue. Mid-level engineers learn what good architecture looks like not by reading about it but by living through the consequences of bad architecture. They develop intuition for failure modes by debugging systems that fail in unexpected ways. They learn to read code critically because they inherit codebases where critical reading is survival. They absorb the unwritten rules of production software—the invariants that must hold, the edge cases that must be handled, the dependencies that must be managed—through direct exposure over time.

This learning depends on a particular kind of work: work that is difficult enough to be instructive but routine enough to be assigned to someone still learning. The grunt work of software development has always served a dual purpose. It produces output that the business needs, and it produces experience that the developer needs. Authentication logic, CRUD operations, data migration scripts, integration tests—these tasks are not glamorous, but they are the curriculum through which mid-level engineers develop judgment.

AI assistants are now absorbing exactly this category of work. A junior developer with an assistant can produce the authentication flow without necessarily understanding OAuth deeply. They can generate the data migration without internalizing the patterns that prevent data loss. They can create the integration tests without developing an intuition for which behaviors actually need testing. The output exists, the deadline is met, but the educational side effect never occurs.

The hiring patterns reflect this shift. Entry-level positions have contracted sharply over the past two years, and technology internships have become harder to find. The rationale from employers is always the same: if an AI can do the work of a junior developer, why pay a junior developer to learn on the job? The short-term economics make sense. The long-term implications are harder to ignore.

The emerging model is not entirely without merit. There is a case that mid-level development is changing rather than disappearing. The skills that matter may shift from implementing common patterns to orchestrating AI-assisted workflows, from writing code to reviewing it, from knowing syntax to knowing systems. Developers who master these competencies could accelerate through the traditional learning curve. The optimistic scenario involves a new kind of mid-level engineer who learns differently but still develops the judgment that production software requires.

The pessimistic scenario is grimmer. It involves a generation of developers who can produce but not debug, who can ship features but not maintain them over time. Anyone who has reviewed AI-generated pull requests from less experienced team members will recognize the pattern: code that runs but does not reason, implementations that handle the happy path but collapse under edge conditions, security boundaries that exist on paper but not in practice. The assistant produces confident output. Confidence is not correctness.

The industry has faced similar transitions before. Managed languages replaced manual memory management. Frameworks abstracted away HTTP parsing. Cloud services eliminated server provisioning. Each shift eliminated certain categories of foundational work without eliminating the need for developers who understand what the abstractions are hiding. The question is whether AI-assisted development follows the same pattern or represents something qualitatively different—whether we are abstracting away implementation details or abstracting away the process through which engineers learn to think.

The structural challenge is that the forcing function for mid-level skill development has always been necessity. Developers learned to debug because bugs appeared and someone had to fix them. They learned to architect because systems grew and someone had to reorganize them. They learned to estimate because deadlines approached and someone had to answer whether the work would be done. AI assistants can now perform the initial work without producing the errors that teach debugging, the mess that teaches architecture, or the surprises that teach estimation. The output is cleaner, but the curriculum is thinner.

The obvious response is more deliberate mentorship—pairing juniors with seniors on work that actually requires judgment, not just completion. Whether organizations have the patience for that when the AI can just produce the output directly is unclear.

The stakes extend beyond any individual company. Software has become infrastructure for essentially everything, and the quality of that infrastructure depends on the expertise of the people building and maintaining it. A sustained reduction in engineers who truly understand systems—who can reason about failure modes and make appropriate trade-offs—will eventually manifest as fragility in the systems we all depend on. We may not notice the degradation immediately. These problems compound slowly, then suddenly.

The middle is missing not because mid-level developers have become obsolete but because the pathway to mid-level competence is being disrupted. The industry’s enthusiasm for productivity gains is understandable, but it should be tempered by awareness of what those gains may cost.

The judgment to know when code is wrong is still developed the old-fashioned way. If we eliminate the opportunities to develop it, we should expect it to become scarce.
